The Water Cooler

Another WONDERFUL day here at MHF! Thomas our shelter mascot cat really enjoyed greeting all of our visitors. We adopted out 3 kitties: Baby Squeeks, Chaz & Chevron, took in 6 sheep and 3 goats from a large seizure( we will have babies fairly soon too as some appear pregnant), and we had many wonderful volunteers come by to walk dogs, snuggle with the cats and help us with spring cleaning projects! Lastly, an adorable 6 year old gal named Shay stopped by with her brother Jack. Shay collected donations for our animals in honor of her birthday! We are so fortunate to have so many great people in our lives...

We are taking advantage of this wonderful summer weather, new horses Matt, Dixie and Pippi enjoyed a nice bath, including a good roll in the dirt today. All three are seeking their new perfect, loving forever homes where they can sit beside you and share meals! Please help by filling out an application to foster or adopt these wonderful horses.

March 5, 2016

A great big thank you to Brooke Worth for asking her friends to bring donations to help our animals to her 10th birthday party in lieu of presents! Way to go Brooke! Purrs, licks & hugs!

Cats in Need: There is a colony of kitties that live at the boat landing in Front Royal that needs help. MHF has helped this colony with TNR over the years. Warren County & the Department of Game & Inland Fisheries is requiring the colony to be rehomed. Many of the friendly cats will be removed & taken in by the Humane Society of Warren County. They will need help with placement of the semi-ferals & feral’s in the near future, so anyone who can help by taking some kitties in their barns would be great. These cats have lived there for many years & are used to living outside-now they just need a safe place to live with food & shelter. Please contact the Humane Society of Warren County Shelter if you can help! (540) 635-4734

Community Service Days

A great BIG thank you to Leesburg Veterinary Hospital & Centreville Animal Hospital and to all the vet techs & veterinarians who donated their time to help us with numerous spays, neuters & miscellaneous surgeries for the animals. These Community Service Days are a tremendous help!

A WONDERFUL Valentines weekend at MHF!

Our hearts are overwhelmed with the love, generosity, commitment and support from the community. In the past three days we have rescued an emaciated horse who is now under the care of Dr. Andrea Russell. Melanie, our Volunteer Coordinator reached out to our wonderful volunteers and many came to help remove thousands of painful burrs. (Pics to follow once we have completed the case...) We also placed two darling little kittens Dani & Peter into a wonderful new home, took in two one eyed equines who needed our assistance, performed numerous welfare investigations helping animals who were out in the extreme weather, took in 8 cats that also really needed our help, held a fun meet & greet event at Petsmart with the help of a Brownie Troop, secured homes for several of our shelter dogs and held a hugely successful 2nd annual private estate dinner event!

A heartfelt thank you to ALL!

February 14, 2016

We sent out a request for equine help today and received all the help we needed in 30 minutes. One of our volunteers responded with "Wow! In 30 minutes, in the middle of a Sunday in the middle of a 3-day weekend that also happens to be Valentine's Day AND colder than a wolf's nose! Nice going! Surely, this kind of response is the best way we volunteers could have to say "Happy Valentine's Day" to our beloved MHF.

Love to all the MHF Volunteers!

A huge thank you to Tri-County for the continued support throughout the year!

We are honored to announce that MHF is part of TCFFF’s Giving Back Program.

Tri-County will be donating a portion of the proceeds from the sale of their branded TCF Horse Feeds to the rescue and rehabilitation efforts for less fortunate equines through programs offered by Equine Rescue League and MHF.

In addition, as a thank you to people who have opened their heart and home to a rescued animal, TCFFF will offer a free collar tag or halter plate for a newly adopted pet from MHF. TCFFF will also donate a portion of the proceeds from the first purchase of pet/horse supply bought at TCFFF to MHF.

Animal shelters are businesses that never close. As long as there are animals, there is work to be done. Having a huge snowstorm doesn’t lessen that amount of work, it just makes it more difficult. MHF is lucky to have so many people helping out during these times. Before the storm we were able to place many shelter animals into foster homes, so we owe a huge thanks to all the foster families. MHF has the best neighbor in the world! Thank you Mike Westerman for plowing at the shelter. We also would like to thank the Trumbo family for loaning us a generator. One big plus that came from the storm? Anna May and Scarlet are being adopted by their foster families!

We had another incredible year at MHF. My people friends were able to rescue & help hundreds of animals! In addition to all the animals that found forever homes through the adoption program, countless others in the community were helped through our life saving programs.

In 2015 MHF:

  • Found forever homes for: 143 dogs, 136 cats, 4 donkeys, 2 mules, 12 horses/ponies, 1 rat, 2 rabbits, 8 ducks, 26 chickens, 5 pigs, & 7 goats!
  • TNR’d (Trap/Neuter/Returned) 240 cats
  • Provided emergency/affordable medical services for 184 animals
  • Was instrumental in the passage of a Humane Tethering Code for Fauquier County
  • Provided 50+ families with pet food through our Pet Food Bank
  • President & Founder, Hilleary Bogley, received the Citizen of the Year award for Scott District, Fauquier County.

Middleburg Humane Foundation is excited and proud to announce the ground breaking of its new shelter campus headquarters at 5000 Cunningham Dr. in Marshall VA. This will be phase 1 of two phases which will complete the entire headquarters.

Phase 1 encompasses the stables/barn and various livestock enclosures, as well as a four bay shed for storage of supplies, equipment, feed and hay. Phase 1 will enable MHF to serve the ever increasing needs of our equine and various livestock rescue programs. Above the stables there will be two apartments to house employees on site which will facilitate 24/7 care for the animals.

Phase 1, was designed by Earth Design, being constructed by the Princeton Companies, and project management by Promacs. It is estimated that the construction will take approximately six months, which will provide occupancy by next summer.

We would like to thank the community who have come together in support of this great project. Livestock Facility Sponsorship opportunities are still available! Please contact us if you would like to be a part of our future and help us build a better shelter. We are excited about the upcoming opportunities for Middleburg Humane and look forward to providing assistance and programs for many more people and animals.

We also have a fun Adoption Booth and Silent Auction at Willoughby Farm on Sunday at the MG Classic Car Show. The shelter will be closed Friday- Sunday. Things are really moving along with breaking ground for our new livestock facility... if all continues to go well, we WILL break ground in the next couple of weeks! Many cats & dogs are being adopted thanks to River our Adoption Coordinator and lots of spay/neuter surgeries scheduled for this week too so, great work by all. Lastly this adorable little toad was brought to us today so Rene ran him/ her up to Blue Ridge Wildlife. He/she has a badly injured leg and was very lethargic, so please send healing vibes! Lots of lives are being saved and many animals are getting a well deserved second chance at a happy & healthy all because of your support. It takes a village....THANKS TO ALL!

Katie, our pregnant momma donkey is getting BIGGER every day! We can see the baby moving a lot... or babies? Could she be carrying twins? She is certainly large enough to have two little kids in there, but we are told twins are not common in donkeys, so who knows! The vet says that donkeys don't bag up/wax like mares, so it's not as evident... I guess it will be a total surprise! Meanwhile, we are very appreciative of the hay donations coming in through Southern States, Tri-County, & the Coop. Many thanks to everyone who has purchased hay for us. This has been a huge help! We still need good quality hay for this group, so next time you are shopping at the feed store, please consider buying a bale for us! The Donkey Baby Shower will be a blast! Date TBA...Please stay tuned

We are overwhelmingly HAPPY to report that after 3+ years of research & approaching the county, a Humane Tethering Code for Fauquier County PASSED last night! All 5 Supervisors voted in favor! The new county code is:

 * No tethering of puppies 6 months or younger

 * No tethering of female dogs while in estrus

 * No tethering when the temperature is 25F & below/ 95F & above. Please note: we asked for 32F & below/ 90F & above. After numerous letter from veterinarians with professional opinions to support changes, the BOS agreed and will vote to change the temp restrictions to the 32F/ 90F at next months public hearing. We will continue to work hard to strengthen this code so that NO dog will be chained 24/7 but for now, we are thrilled with this step in the right direction. A great BIG thank you to the Fauquier BOS, everyone who wrote letters & attended the meeting to show support, Tracy Gahler, Kathy Durand, Charlotte Flohr, & Jeanne Ebson for all of the time and work you all put into this! On behalf of the dogs: HUGS & LICKS to all!

GREAT NEWS! Save the Date! A public hearing on the Humane Tethering Code proposal for Fauquier County is on the Board of Supervisors agenda!!! We want to make a difference for dogs that live their lives on chains. This is a step in the right direction! We need YOUR help: The Board of Supervisors will hear the proposal as well as comments from the public on Thursday, June 11th at 6:30pm at the Warren Green Building in Warrenton, VA. We need as many people to come as possible to support this proposal which will limit/ get dogs off of being chained 24/7. We will hand out support stickers for all to wear. Please attend & show your support for these less fortunate animals & help make a difference in their lives! We will stay in touch.

So many people were involved in saving this little baby birds life.  He/She has a really sad story: His tree was cut down & all his siblings were killed. He was rescued by a Good Samaritan (Julia) who found him while walking on her lunch break.  She hid him at her work and fed him throughout the day until she could bring him to us.  Hilleary fed him his dinner & Kim gave him breakfast.  He certainly has a huge appetite!!  Then a volunteer (Barbara) gave him a ride to Blue Ridge Wildlife so they can help raise him until he is a fledgling. Thanks to everyone who helped save his life!!!

Thank you so much to our volunteers on the long, backbreaking hours they put in toward the remodel of the Middleburg Humane Thrift Shop.  It took Nancy Hanscom, Judene Marchetti, and Karen Williams a total of a week and a half working every day, including weekends, to get everything moved out, patched up, painted, sorted, everything moved back in, organized, & last minute touches finished in order to finally open again. Even Matt Williams and Joe Marchetti, the volunteers' husbands, were kind enough to help out by working on installing shelf racks.

We don't know how you got everything done so fast, but it looks fantastic! Thank you so much!

The Virginia State Senate passed the Feral Cat legislation on February 5th. It now goes to the House of Delegates for passage.

Middleburg Humane Foundation urges you to email your representative asking them to vote in favor of Senate bill 693 when it is reported out of committee. Below is sample email text.

Fauquier delegate:

 Michael Webert (

Loudoun delegate:

 J. Randall Minchew (

I am writing you to urge your support for passage of Senate Bill 693 when it comes up for a vote in the House of Delegates. I am a supporter of the Middleburg Humane Foundation which has an active program to trap, neuter and return (TNR) feral cats. This program promotes healthy, vaccinated, non-reproductive feral cat colonies. It is the only viable solution to the feral cat problem. This bill will immunize the activities of TNR providers who otherwise might be in violation of existing Statute that prohibits the abandonment of dumping of domestic animals.

He has some dry skin, a small scab at the very end of his tail and he did loose a little of the tip of each ear but he overall, he looks and feels great. There seems to be absolutely no scarring on his body or face. His feet are doing as well as can be expected but he still needs to stay on cushy surfaces for at least another month while his protective toe nails grow. He is still a bit porky ( no pun intended) because he is not able to be as active as usual. Pebbles was relaxed and happy to be here; wagging his adorable little tail and giving many kisses... we just LOVE this pig! Thanks again to each and everyone one of you that helped us save his life. Hugs & Oinks to all!

By Diane Morgan

I am the bridge,

Between what was and what can be.

I am the pathway to a new life.

I am made of mush,

Because my heart melted when I saw you,

Matted and sore, limping, depressed

Lonely, unwanted, afraid to love.

For one little time you are mine.

I will feed you with my own hand.

I will love you with my whole heart.

I will make you whole.

I am made of steel.

Because when the time comes,

When you are well, and sleek,

when your eyes shine,

And your tail wags with joy

Then comes the hard part.

I will let you go-not without a tear,

But without a regret.

For you are safe forever--

A new animal needs me now.

"Food is not about impressing people. It's about making them feel comfortable."

Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole. ~Roger Caras

When you shop at any of over 1,200 participating online stores through iGive (You’ll see all your favorites, including, Best Buy, Staples, eBay, and Pottery Barn), a portion of each purchase (up to 26%) comes back to MHF in the form of a donation check. Plus raise a penny (or more!) for our organization every time you search the web.

It's free for you, free for us, and you pay the same (or less!) than you would by going directly to the store. Shopping online means no wasted gas and no more standing in long lines at the mall. And to all you smart shoppers: don't miss iGive's treasure-trove of coupons, sales, and free shipping.

Save money, save time, and send gifts that give twice. What could be better than that?
